SINCE 1955Our History
Perrywood takes its name from Perry's Wood, which lies next to the original site. The business began in 1955 when Alan Bourne’s parents, Mary and Les, purchased the land and founded Perrywood Nurseries. They initially focused on growing potatoes and offering pick-your-own strawberries.
After gaining experience with Colchester Parks Department—and witnessing the rise of supermarkets in the strawberry trade—Alan returned to the family business. He began selling plants from the front of the property and, in 1984, he and his wife Karin took over the nursery.
Over the next 30 years, they transformed Perrywood into an award-winning garden centre, now attracting visitors from across Essex and beyond. The business expanded in 2018 with the acquisition of Perrywood Sudbury in Suffolk, and again in 2024 with the addition of Perrywood Buckhatch, near Chelmsford.
Today, Alan and his three children—Hannah, Simon, and Tristan—proudly run three thriving garden centres, continuing the family legacy and passion for plants.
What our customers say
Has to be the nicest garden centre I have ever been to. Staff are lovely, all helpful, keen and passionate about what they do. The plants are well cared for and look healthy and nicely displayed.
